Ask HN: What would happen if your company stopped using all AI tomorrow?

Hacker News · idopmstuff · Posted August 31, 2026 · Reviewed September 1, 2026

“I've got all kinds of useful tools that do helpful things, like check to make sure Amazon hasn't lost a bunch of my inventory or suddenly deindexed my product from search. These sorts of things happen without warning from time to time and are trivially fixable if you catch them, but you have to be constantly monitoring 10 different things to catch anything that could go wrong in a timely fashion.”

The entry sells specialized tools to small e-commerce operators, and he is one: a one-man show running a dozen small brands, naming the exact job it would do — catching an inventory loss or a sudden deindexing that arrives without warning, is trivially fixable if you see it, and otherwise requires watching ten things at once. Read it as a costing of the entry rather than as demand for it, because he opens by saying these are tools he built himself, and the rest of the comment lists more of them: an inventory and cashflow system, a scraper that keeps his order status board updated from his supplier conversations, a routine that reads his search and ads reports and rewrites the listing. The buyer this entry is written for now builds the product himself, and says a site redesign took him about eight hours. One line cuts the other way, and it is his: the scraper is finicky, and he says he would not be able to repair it once it broke — the argument for buying rather than building, made by the person who built. Four reservations. His platform is Amazon, and the entry names Shopify, WooCommerce and Etsy; the one Shopify site he owns came attached to a brand he acquired and he describes it as having had minimal sales. He buys and operates brands off marketplaces rather than making anything, so he is not the fashion or food seller the entry pictures. The question he answers asks what he would lose if AI were taken away, which invites an inventory of tooling and never asks whether he would have paid for any of it. And the single reply he received is off topic — it asks where he finds brands to buy — so nothing here was tested by anyone.
